Academy Logbook – Weekly Warm Up
Every week, you will add a new entry to your Academy Logbook as you explore the world of IK2W. You might uncover a mystery, discover a hidden piece of Academy history, solve a problem, or help shape what happens next.
But here is where it gets interesting: you are not just reading the history of the IK2W Academy. You are helping write it.
Throughout the quarter, I will choose some of the most creative, thoughtful, and well-written student entries to become part of the Official Academy Logbook, where they will be published for others to read. Will one of your entries become part of Academy history?

This Week’s Assignment:
As a new Academy student, you receive a campus map and are asked to recommend one additional location that should be added in the future. Describe your idea and explain how it would help writers become stronger.
Project #1
The Academy Exploration Society is searching for exciting new destinations where writers, explorers, and adventurers can escape from their everyday lives. They have invited you to create a brand-new adventure resort.
Your challenge is to design an unforgettable destination and explain your idea clearly enough that the Academy Exploration Society can imagine what it would be like to visit.
Step 1: Imagine
Every great destination begins with a possibility. Before deciding on activities, restaurants, or room designs, imagine the kind of adventure you want your guests to experience.
Your resort could be hidden in a rainforest, built into the side of a mountain, floating on the ocean, tucked beneath the ground, located in the Arctic, or somewhere completely unexpected. It can be realistic or stretch the boundaries of what might someday be possible.
- Where would I love to go on an adventure?
- What kind of environment would make an amazing resort?
- What adventures would I want to experience there?
- Who would want to visit my resort?
- What would guests see when they first arrive?
- How would I want guests to feel while they are there?
- What could guests experience at my resort that they couldn’t experience anywhere else?
- If money, location, and technology were not limits, what would I create?
Begin with the experience, not a list of activities. “What adventure do you want your guests to remember for the rest of their lives?”
A strong resort concept should feel connected. Its location, accommodations, activities, food, and special features should all contribute to the experience you are trying to create.
Step 2: Question
Questions turn an exciting idea into a destination that feels real.
- What is my resort called?
- Where is it located?
- What is special about the location?
- Who is my resort designed for?
- How do guests get there?
- Where do guests stay?
- What kinds of rooms, cabins, tents, treehouses, or other accommodations are available?
- What adventures and activities can guests experience?
- Is there one signature adventure my resort is known for?
- What do guests do when they aren’t adventuring?
- Where and what do guests eat?
- What services does the resort provide?
- How does the resort keep guests safe?
- Does weather affect any of the activities?
- Are there activities for people who don’t want extreme adventures?
- What makes my resort different from other vacation destinations?
- What will guests remember most about their visit?
- Why would someone want to return?

Homework
Week 1:
Homework is due by 7 am on the day of your class. Any homework submitted after that is considered late. That means, you are not allowed to finish it right before class. If you do, it will still be incomplete as I will have already checked your work. Please plan ahead!
- Start exploring the IK2W World! This week: The Story of Flicker, Introduction, IK2W Academy, and The Firefly Path. Of course, you are welcome to visit more locations. The button to enter the world is at the top of this page.
- Logbook entry: Finish what you did not complete in class. See above for assignment details. (Week 1 Logbook)
- Journal: Keep working in your journal. Remember, if you are stuck, go to the “What goes in here?” page in your notebook for ideas. (Entry 1)
- Grammar: Finish your noun sentences in your notebook (W1 Grammar). Don’t forget to double check your work!
- Project work: Finish step 1 & 2. (Project 1 Resort for step 1 & Question for step 2) The questions you need to ask and answer are above. Make sure to copy and paste them into your notebook and put a lot of thought into your resort. Be ready to explain it next week.
Note: I have listed in parenthesis ( ) where each assignment should go in your notebook. If it is not in the correct section, I will think your homework is incomplete.
