Academy Logbook – Weekly Warm Up
Every week, you will add a new entry to your Academy Logbook as you explore the world of IK2W. You might uncover a mystery, discover a hidden piece of Academy history, solve a problem, or help shape what happens next.
But here is where it gets interesting: you are not just reading the history of the IK2W Academy. You are helping write it.
Throughout the quarter, I will choose some of the most creative, thoughtful, and well-written student entries to become part of the Official Academy Logbook, where they will be published for others to read. Will one of your entries become part of Academy history?

This Week’s Assignment:
You are given a tour of the Academy by an older student. Which place interests you the most? Explain why you would want to visit it first and what you hope to discover there.
Project #1
The Academy Marketplace is growing, and visitors from across the realm are arriving every day. The Marketplace Council has invited you to open a brand-new restaurant.
Your challenge is to create a restaurant people will remember and explain your idea clearly enough that the Marketplace Council can picture exactly what you want to create.
Step 1: Imagine
Every restaurant begins with an idea. Before deciding on every little detail, imagine the experience you want to create. Your restaurant can be realistic, unusual, futuristic, adventurous, elegant, silly, or something no one has ever seen before.
- What kind of restaurant would I love to visit?
- What type of food would I serve?
- What would make my restaurant different from other restaurants?
- What would the restaurant look like?
- What would it feel like to eat there?
- Who would enjoy visiting my restaurant?
- What surprising or creative feature could make people remember it?
- If there were no limits, what restaurant would I create?
Begin with the big idea rather than immediately choosing a restaurant name or listing foods. “What experience do you want your customers to have?”
A strong restaurant concept should feel connected. The food, decorations, name, entertainment, and other details should feel as though they belong in the same restaurant.
Brainstorm several possibilities before choosing their favorite.
Step 2: Question
Questions help creators move beyond a fun idea and develop the details that make it believable.
- What is the name of my restaurant?
- What kind of food does it serve?
- Who are my customers?
- Where is my restaurant located?
- What does the restaurant look like inside and outside?
- What atmosphere do I want to create?
- What are some of my most important menu items?
- Does my restaurant have a signature dish?
- How are customers served?
- Does my restaurant have any unusual features?
- What makes my restaurant different from its competitors?
- Why would someone choose my restaurant?
- Why would customers want to come back?

Homework
Week 1:
Homework is due by 7 am on the day of your class. Any homework submitted after that is considered late. That means, you are not allowed to finish it right before class. If you do, it will still be incomplete as I will have already checked your work. Please plan ahead!
- Start exploring the IK2W World! This week: The Story of Flicker, Introduction, IK2W Academy, and The Firefly Path. Of course, you are welcome to visit more locations. The button to enter the world is at the top of this page.
- Logbook entry: Finish what you did not complete in class. See above for assignment details. (Week 1 Logbook)
- Journal: Keep working in your journal. Remember, if you are stuck, go to the “What goes in here?” page in your notebook for ideas. (Entry 1)
- Grammar: Finish your noun sentences in your notebook (W1 Grammar). Don’t forget to double check your work!
- Project work: Finish step 1 & 2. (Project 1 Restaurant for step 1 & Question for step 2) The questions you need to ask and answer are above. Make sure to copy and paste them into your notebook and put a lot of thought into your restaurant. Be ready to explain it next week.
Note: I have listed in parenthesis ( ) where each assignment should go in your notebook. If it is not in the correct section, I will think your homework is incomplete.
